Before we dive into the blog post for this “week”, quick little update on why I haven’t posted for awhile. I hurt my knee in a softball game and then four days later I got the most precious golden retriever puppy (pictured. his name is Stanley Pup). I have had this post started for quite some time. I apologize for the delay and I don’t want to keep you waiting any longer so let us dive in….
Let me paint you a picture. Your siblings are on the front line of a war for your nation. Your father is yearning for an update on his children, so you find someone to watch your sheep to obey your father after he asks you to check on your siblings. Your dad sends you with food and other items for them. You arrive right as the soldiers are waking up, are have had their breakfast and heading out to line up against the Philistine army. This is exactly what happened to David the shepherd.
David watched as the Giant from Gath walked to the halfway point between the two nations. This Giant man – Goliath – mocked the Lord God Almighty of Israel and this didn’t sit well with young David. David asked who this man was that he should defy the armies of the living God. He talked to enough men in the army that King Saul summoned David to him and basically told David that he was a child – a “youth” – and Goliath was a man of war since youth. David may not have been in the army but he held his own accomplishments.
David spoke to King Saul about the BEAR he killed and the LION he took down to defend his sheep. He knows he had God on his side then and he will again. He says this in 1 Samuel 17:36-37 “‘Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.’ Moreover David said, ‘ The LORD, who delivers me from the paw or the lion and the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.’ And Saul said to David, ‘Go, and the LORD be with you!'”
David has what my mom refers to as faith blocks. He took down a bear and a lion and when he did those, God took care of him and protected him. David could see Goliath, a behemoth sized man, just fine but what David had was a foundation of faith blocks and what he saw wasn’t scary. A 9-foot man was standing before them, not one soldier in the Israelite army would stand against him but what David saw was a man standing against the Lord. David knew Goliath’s height and his strength was great but His God is the Lord Almighty and is GREATER. The Great I Am. The one who breathes stars and with words created our universe. That God is a God that nothing can stand against and David knew it and confidently stood with that truth.
David forwent the armor and picked up a handful of rocks and slung them at this man who mocked God and David won the victory because of the Lord. He defeated the enemy of the Israelite army. He didn’t do it for his own glory nor did he do it because he though he had to be God’s defender. He did it because he was willing to be God’s tool. He was a man after God’s own heart and he fought Goliath because no one can stand against God.
David faced a Giant and won against all odds. He brought a rock to a sword fight and God used him to show that with God on your side, you will win and the victory and glory will be God’s. He is mighty enough to use a child and rocks to beat a 9′ seasoned warrior with a javelin and sword. If God is on your side then nothing can stand against you. David had faith blocks – symbols or times in his life that he could look back on and say “God delivered me at that moment” or “God fulfilled his promises to me then” or ” That is right when God showed me His plan”. These moments that David had from God that he could point at and confidently know that God was there which gave him fuel to trust God when David faced other things in life – like a Giant.
